Error loading Plugin on MAC

Explorer ,
Jul 27, 2021 Jul 27, 2021

Hi,

I'm developing a Plugin for Adobe Illustrator and recently I made an update of Illustrator on macOS Mojave (10.14.6) to Adobe Illustrator version 25.3.1.

Since then when starting Illustrator I get the following error message "Error loading Plugins." (with the plugin I'm developing listed underneath).

Afterwards I tried to downgrade Illustrator (I tried several versions, also the one I had previously to 25.3.1), but with the same error message.

I already experienced this problem a while ago in another context, but was able to fix it by checking the "output"-window of XCode and seeing a helpful error message that a library could not be found.

Today, I do not see any error message in the outputwindow.

I also tried to uninstall Illustrator, the plugin, the preference files etc., but nothing solved the problem.

Any suggestsions what I can do to figure out what is causing the problem?

Thanks,

Stefan

When you uninstalled, did you use Adobe's cleaner tool?

Hi @StefanAchi,

Some obvious points to check for such issues

  • Are you using the recommended version of XCode for creating the build? See the SDK documentation for the XCode version
  • Make sure any dynamic framework/library needed by the plugin is available on the MAC and loaded
  • Try compiling a sample SDK plugin and see if it loads. If it does then compare the differences your plugin has with the SDK sample in terms of libraries/frameworks used, project settings etc
  • Make sure that the proper debug or release flags are used while compilation of the plugin

Plugin developers typically work to keep an archive of every possible version of Illustrator (because they want to support customers with that version). That may mean keeping a collection of VMs. So you'd never update, deleting the old version, nor need to downgrade. Yes, I know this isn't a solution, but it may help you plan.
