Error when trying to apply halftone effect in Illustrator

I created a new file (large file size 10ft x 3.875 ft) with nothing in it. I create a rectangle with plain gradient in order to place a halftone effect & it gives an error. How do fix this? This occurs even after I quit. If I try a smaller size rectangle it might work with long delays. I'm running catalina 10.15.7 with illustrator CC 2021.

What do I need to do to get it to work?

What is your document raster effects PPI? (Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings)

I tried 72 and it worked fine; upping to 300 and I got an out of memory error. I think it's too many pixels for a large document.

As Doug mentioned, what Document Raster Effects Settings and the settings of the Halftone Effect?

If the gradient is the only thing you want to apply the effect to, than Photoshop may be the better app for this.

I may end up taking it into photoshop, this is for a large printed display - larger than dimensions I'm working in now. I eventually will be editing colors etc. too. I was trying to figue how I wanted to use the effect first. I guess I wasn't aware of the memory limitations of Illustrator.

I've moved this from the Using the Community forum (which is the forum for issues using the forums) to the Illustrator, & Plan forum so that proper help can be offered.
