Even spacing between objects vertical & horizontal

Can selected shapes be vertically and horizontally spaced equally in Illustrator? In this illustration I visually spaced elements, which is obvious.

Yes, there is an alignment panel in Illustrator. You have the option of aligning to the artboard, to objects that are selected or to a key object. You may need to play around a little, the bottom row allows you to distribute spacing. You can do exactly what you are trying to do, but it will take more than one step.
