Exporting file to dxf or dwg in Illustrator

I am trying to export a pdf file to a dxf or dwg in Illustrator, but when I do it saves each individual path into it's own separate file. I end up with more than 18,000 png files.  What am I doing wrong?

sounds like your pdf art is rasterized so on export to dxf it exports as textures. pdfs will someone break up an image in squares for extra compression.

thanks for the response!  The original 'art' was created in AutoCad or Revit then exported to a pdf using PDF Creator.  It is mostly a line illustration of building plans.  When I export to dxf, it puts each little line segment into its own file.  I literally have 18000+ png files and not a single dxf file.  When pdf is opened in Illustrator, it is already in paths and can be edited. Not sure if any of that information helps, but throwing it out there.  I don't work in AutoCad, just helping out someone trying to recover some files without having to rebuild them.

what are your export settings from illustrator?

did you have "preserve appearance" checked? taht might have done it.
