Extend a part of a character

Community Beginner ,
Oct 09, 2019 Oct 09, 2019

Hello,

I am looking to extend the swash of the character in the attached image. I am a begginer with illustrator (i know enough to get by most times) I only want the line extended and not the rest of the "t".

using illustrator 23.1 (CC2019)

Thank you for any help.

Bill

If you select Type > Create Outlines you will be able to modify the swash.

I did that but I am not sure how to modify just the swatch. I tried the pen tool with no success on how I wanted to extend it.

Use the "Direct Select" tool to select just the points you want to move or edit.

Depending on the font there are sometimes alternate characters to choose from as well. These may include "swash" variations. Open "Window>Type>Glyphs" to view them. Double-click a charaacter to add it to an active text block.

One quick option if you have CC 2019 is to usse the puppet warp tool, very easy...

Hi Bill,

Glyphs are treated by Illustrator as text so, to extend the line by dragging anchor points, first you need to turn the glyph into a shape so that you have actual anchor points to drag. You can do that by coping the glyph itself into a separate layer, selecting it, then going to Object > Expand. Then, you will have a shape to work with.

My vote would be to Outline text and

totally delete that existing swash of the t character.

Shown in Cyan.  A closed filled path.

Easy to create your own Swash!

Draw a new stroke path.

The Pencil Tool and the Width tool are your friends here.

Duplicate for safety

Finally Expand your stroke, now both are fills. One color

Pathfinders> Unite
