Extracting images from a PDF

Hi there! I've been asked to rebuild a brochure. All I have is a PDF... not the original artwork. What is the best way to extract the photos... to retain their resolution? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Correct answer Ton Frederiks

I would use Open in Photoshop and use the Images option to select multiple images.

I would agree with Ton on this one. Open the PDF in Photoshop, choose the Images tab and go from there.

What is the benefit of opening the PDF in PS vs. Exporting All Images?

When extracting images, I use Edit under the tools tab. Here's a video about editing PDFs: http://www.jeffwitchel.net/2012/01/gradient-mesh-magic/

Check about 3:45 into the video to see opening an image from a PDF in Photoshop. Once it's open, do a Save As.

But wouldn't that mean I am setting the resolution when I open them? I want to save them as big as they can possibly be... so what they were originally saved at when the PDF was created. Does that make sense? Or am I not understanding your approach?

It will keep the resolution.

File > Export All > Images > [format]

I would use TIFF for print and PNG for web or video.

Thank you!  But when I go to File, there's no "Export All" choice. I see "Export to"...?

To export the images themselves, rather than images of pages, you need a different approach.

In Acrobat, in the right hand panel go to the Export tool (use Tool Search if necesary)

Choose format and switch on Export all images

Click Export

At least, that's what it looks like today. Adobe may change it any time it suits them...
