eyedropper tool does not work with patterns

Question

hi adobe community,

i am an architecture student who has watched a few tutorials on how to use pre-made custom patterns as hatches for sections and in each of them, the eydropper tool has been used.

I have downloaded a few illustrator patterns from adobe stock and proceed to use them in my drawings - from what i understand: select desired shape > click eyedropper tool > click on the pattern and voila.

I have done this multiple times with various keys pressed at the same time (ctrl, alt, fn etc.), but all it does is colour my main shape with the colour of the pattern (black), and not with the colour itself.

Please can someone help, I really don't know how I can fix this

The  clipart probably does not contain real patterns. You can try and select one such artwork and then drag it into the swatches panel.This creates a pattern that you can then apply to your shape.

Alexandra, just a thought, are the downloaded patterns actual Pattern Swatches?

Here I created 4 shapes and filled with a color.

I duplicated and manually filled with 4 different Pattern Swatches.

If I took the original shape and selected, then switched to the eyedropper tool and sampled the shape with Pattern Swatch, it does pickup the pattern and not just the color.
