Font samples not displaying in Illustrator. How do I fix?

I'm using CS4 and I have an issue with the font samples not displaying either when I use the drop down menu on the bar at the top (Application bar?), or when I open the character panel. With the character panel I can highlight the font, which will show a sample, but it's invisibile otherwise unless I highlight it.

I often get messages about pug ins being installed and having to restart, but this never solves the issue. I also reinstalled my software a couple years ago with fix, obviously. I'm using Sierra, which is at version 10.6, I belive. I'm posting this using my PC. I think I tried updating to Mojave which cause issues with Photoshop, and I had the problem using the previous version of OS, so I'm not certain that's really the issue. Any idea how to fix this?

I am not sure what version the fonts were first displayed in the drop down menu. It might not have been available in CS4. Did it previously work and is not working now?

I'm not sure if I wasn't clear in the original post, but I can see the samples individually if I hover over them with a cursor, but everything is otherwise blank. Both inDesign and Photoshop have no issues with displaying them. I've relied on having PS open in order to see samples, but that's a bit inconvenient.

Oh, I see you are not even getting the name. Hmm . . . then I would try resetting preferences as suggested above.

Hi, sorry about that
I don’t have a solution, but maybe if you try to reset the preferences will work, here the instructions:
Restore all preferences and default settings

https://helpx.adobe.com/es/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html

Also there is a TYPE preference "Enable in-menu font preview" but I don't remember if that is in older versions

This is for Illustrator, not inDesign. I'm guessing the process would be similar though. I'll have to try these out eventually.
