1. Some of the fonts I install (3rd party) in Font Book show up in the Font Book folder but not in the Illustrator Font Family menu.

2.  When I open a new Illustrator file it selects the default font. If I specify a different font in a text block it changes to that font. If I return and select one of the letters it automatically changes to the default font.

Those 2 problems are probably unrelated. The second one: try and uncheck "Missing glyph protection" in the preferences.

For the first one: which fonts are they? Something from dafont?

Do the fonts appear after rebooting the computer?

Thanks for your help. Turning off "Missing glyph protection" seems to have solved both problems!

Oh, wow. I wouldn't have thought that.

Thank you for the added info.

Well it turns out I spoke to soon. Changing the  "Missing glyph protection" button made the second problem go away, but the 3rd party fonts are still acting up. "Nooa" and "Miles" are two fonts that don't work correctly.

I'm not sure what you mean by "validate". Miles shows up in Font Book-Nooa dosen't. I noticed that both fonts are upper case only. If I turn the cap locks on they both work fine. Thanks again for your help.

I'd like to read the file you sent me. However I can't read German and I don't see an option to translate it to English.

It should open whatever is your language by default. I cannot change it to english. It would always switch back on its own. You could replace the de-de part in it by en-en or en-us or even delete that part. I do not know how Apple codes language on its website.

I changed the code from de-de to en-en and it worked! Thanks again.
