Fun in 29.7.1: "The document "" is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete"

Community Beginner ,
Aug 19, 2025 Aug 19, 2025

Since updating Illustrator to 29.7.1, I've run upon several issues that are affecting productivity, but the two that are the biggest losers are the randomly-appearing-on-save "The document "" is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete" issue and the Preferences > Keyboard Increment change.

nosavenohappy.png

This random save issue is probably the Gold Medal Winner winner of the Frustration Olympics from my angle as when it pops up, the only way I can get around it is to set Paste Remembers Layers, copy all the elements I'm working with to a new document, check that all colors, layters, etc are correct, save it as a new working file, close/reopen the app then delete the original file so I don't get it mixed up with the new one. This is, as they say, no bueno por caca. Oh, and not to mention the poor grammar of "getting saved."

Runnerup is a lil guy who doesn't seem like much of a contender, but he packs a punch... After years of the preferences window defaulting to Preferences > Keyboard Increment being active upon opening (thus my being used to hitting Ctrl+K, entering a value for the keyboard increment and tapping <return> without really looking,) in 29.7.1, it now defaults to the Search Parameters field being active. So now it's Ctrl+K, 4x tab, enter value and hit return 2x. I realize this is not a dealbreaker but more of a "dammit, Adobe, don't fix it if it ain't broke" annoyance.

prefdefault.jpg

This update is also chock full of surprises like weird redraw issues, commands not completing or even recognizing being called and other oddball save issues that I've only seen randomly a couple of times, therefore not documentable (yet). Anyone else?

Hello everyone,

Our product team has tried fixing this with the latest Illustrator (beta) release. Would you mind installing Illustrator (beta) and letting us know if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

We are experiencing a similar issue using Illustrator CC 2025 v.29.7.1 : working on files saved to Google Drive, using MacOS Sequoia 15.5. We work away on a file (hitting save manually and frequently) and hours later experience a crash and autorecovery AND the actual saved file produce results that show that no actual saving had been occuring throughout the day. This gut-wrenching. Do we start saving files locally? How do we know that our files are acutally saving when closing and reopening reveals that nothing has been saving even though it says it has been?

Can you turn off "Save in background" in the preferences?

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for sharing the details of your experience. Since this is happening across different setups, one step that has helped other users is turning off the 'Save in Background' option in Illustrator preferences and then testing again to see if the save completes properly. I'd also suggest saving the file locally instead of to external or synced locations like Google Drive or Lucid cloud, at least for testing, so we can rule out network or sync interference. If the issue continues, please try restarting your machine in Safe Mode and testing the save there to see if a third-party service may be interfering.

It would be really helpful if you can share back your OS and Illustrator versions, confirm if the issue happens on every file or only certain ones, and let me know whether these steps make a difference. That way I can bring more specifics to the team for further review.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Can confirm that this suggestion (turning off "Save in Background") solved the same crashing / hanging problem I was having. MacOS Tahoe Public Beta 4, Adobe Illustrator 29.7.1 (latest update).

I tried this, turned off "background save", saved as locally, and it still hangs. Mac Book Pro OS Sequoia 15.6.
Each time it stops responding during a save, then it reloads my recovered file i still haven't saved, and i try so hard to Save As or just copy its contents into a new file to save, and nothing is working to keep this file i would like to just not have to remake over and over again. my next move feels like rolling back illustrator versions? would that even work?

Hello @lori_04,

I'm sorry to hear you're still having trouble with this. Could you check if the folder location you're using is not synced using iCloud Drive? Also, try re-enabling Full Disk Access for Illustrator and running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello! We often save onto our OneDrive for access and backup. I can save it locally I suppose: more dragging things around unfortunately. Initially the patterns were being a problem in the files too, so had to put those on different files and use a flat embedded pattern. it seems i have to start a project and then Save-As to my desktop to get it not to hang.
Also, i cannot use an administrator account as i am only allowed as user.
I'll try re-enabling Full Disk Access for Illustrator. thanks!

Hi @lori_04,

Thanks for sharing the details. Since you mentioned saving to OneDrive, could you try saving the file directly to your desktop once and check if the hang still occurs? Also, please re-enable Full Disk Access for Illustrator, as Anubhav suggested, and let us know if that makes a difference. If the issue continues even locally with Full Disk Access enabled, we may need to look deeper, so your confirmation will really help us narrow it down.

Looking forward to your update.

I have been saving locally and then moving the file after complete with Background saving OFF and having no more issues.
I did notice a particular Template file I used previously before this update and issue occurred was saved from a recovery file and also had the save issue if I used it again.
I am turning on the Save in Background again and this is what I am finding so far: So far my first file today saved ok.

Just paid Adobe for full year, and every app--especially Illustrator--freezes up every single time we use it. Tried restarting, login/out/in, different internet connections + devices, adobe and operating system are up to date, illustrator files are legit,..,.,but nothing works -- we can't edit an illustrator file and save it without illustrator freezing: can't click on anything and no keyboard shortcuts work either.

Tried contacting "support" multipe times about this -- the bot is super frustarting and time consuming and not helpful at all. It forces us to choose from a selection of issues, none of which pertain to the issue we're describing. We spend forever in chat with random reps who are of zero help and just keep transfering us to someone new....who also can't help and transferes us...to someone who also can't help and transfers us...

How to we get actual help? Spending hours in useless chats is about as frustrating as software that freezes every single time, even after we've done all the basic troubleshooting over and over and over again.

p.s. all "support" does is ask it take over our computer...their responses have so many grammatical errors and take so long to recieve...they just keep saying they're looking up our account info and then ask to take over our computer...super sketchy

Hello @igisg_0171,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've been experiencing. I reviewed your previous support conversations and noticed there was an open ticket regarding Illustrator freezing when saving files. To help us assist you better, could you please confirm whether you're using Illustrator version 29.7.1 and if your operating system is Windows 11? Additionally, it would be helpful if you could let us know if the issue occurs with new files as well, or only when working with files from specific locations—such as an internal drive, external or network drive, or cloud-synced folders like Google Drive or Dropbox.

Also, could you please try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows) and after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Windows), and checking if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Answered all these questions with "support" multiple times already, but sure...since starting over from scratch with a new rep in every single interaction is Adobe's version of "support:" yes on version and windows 11 and new + existing files and files from internal + external drive and cloud. And...your "support" colleague didn't even get the ticket right because it's not just "freezing when saving files." Like we explained in detail multiple times during more than one chat, it freezes every time we use it and no matter what we're doing: editing with any tool, opening, saving, anything at all.

Also pretty shady of Adobe to release versions when they know they have issues inherently and issues w/operating systems and issues with administrator accounts. Forcing your paying customers to debug, troubleshoot, and test for you is a downright dirty trick.

Really disappointed in Adobe apps and "support" and regretting that we paid for a full year. Definitely not recommending to any colleagues.

p.s. your "support" bot is useless and time consuming and frustrating -- it takes forever to get it to stop going in pointless circles and even if we do persist past that, the only options it gives us to click on aren't related to the issue we're presenting (and it won't let us type in any text...we have to click on one of its five off-base selections), so after a long time getting useless responses from your bot, we eventually get routed to the wrong department, but it takes reps there a ton of time to pass the buck and transfer us to another deparment, where we answer the same questions for at least the fourth time and get transfered again and repeat this process again and again and again -- the pointless bot is your first problem and "support" staff who show no sign of reading what we write is the second. We paid Adobe for a year of this...we're about two weeks in and already regretting giving Adobe money for horrible "support" and broken apps.

Hello from Colorado,

Is anyone else out there having issues with Illustrator 2025 hanging up while saving (and autosaving)? Once it starts autosaving, it never stops - the asterisk never goes away to indicate that the file has been saved. This of course prevents you from exporting the file. I have to force quit every time. This began last night and continues today.

I  have rebooted and am currently running the lastest version of Adobe, along with Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5062553).

Any ideas?

~michele

@She11shokt The first thing I noticed was the 'recovered' file in the screenshot. When Illustrator crashes, it creates a temporary recovered file which often retains some of the corruption or instability from the crash. The fact that the issue began after a crash and is affecting a recovered file makes this a strong possibility.

It is always a good work process if you save different versions, especially if you notice some PC issues. In your case, I would say your app is trying to tell you this file is corrupted.

Hello @ttjyan,

I'm sorry to hear you're still having trouble with this. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, please check if Illustrator has Full Disk Access enabled under system preferences (https://adobe.ly/4mFi5Sk), and if it behaves this way with specific files or files stored in a particular folder location (internal/external/network drive or a cloud-synced folder like iCloud Drive/Dropbox/etc), and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Unfortunately, I'm not a great test subject because this is happening on my work computer, and I am not permitted to install software without involving our IT staff. I will report that the problem stopped after I turned off my autosave settings. Could autosave be the culprit? My autosave is still off.... maybe I will turn it back on today to see what happens.

When I have multiple files open in Illustrator and try to save the first file multiple times while designing, it gets stuck on "saving" and will not stop even when I receive and click the pop-up to select "stop saving."

Having the same issue since the last update. Sometimes it saves the file, other times I have to "Save As" since it won't save, and then there are times like right now that Illustrator says:

Adobe Illustrator

The document'' is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete.

Having the same issue as well. When saving a file (regardless of size or location), the file will either not save or get stuck on the save progression. Fix this ASAP.
