FX no longer showing in symbol appearance

Hello,

When I create a symbol (for example a rectangle shape) and add Offset Path FX to it, the FX appears in the Appearance panel. Once I finish creating the symbol, leave Isolation Mode, and return to edit the symbol, the Offset Path shows on the shape itself on the artboard but does not show in the Appearance panel. As a result, I cannot edit the Offset Path effect for the shape! Is there a way to access it? Is this a bug?

This is for CS4.

Thanks.

Have you tried going back into isolation mode? It may be that the effect is applied to a single object from a group or compound path so can only be accessed when isolated?

Hi Angie,

Thanks for your response. After your suggestion, I went back in to Isolation Mode to edit the symbol and looked at all the layers. I found the Offset Path FX I had added to the symbol though it is unclear to me why it wasn't showing in the appearance panel when I click on the symbol (in isolation mode still). Here's what I "discovered". For the symbol, in Isolation Mode, when I click on the symbol, the Appearance Panel shows Groups, then Contents below that, then Opacity below that, like this:

Group

Contents

Opacity

Only when I click on Contents does the Offset Path FX I had previously added appear! A bit confusing to me. The stack in Appearance then looks like this:

Group: No Appearance

Group

Offset Path

Contents

Opacity

Could you try removing the effect and then reapplying it when you are not in Isolation mode? What happens then?

Angie, in the Symbols panel, when I click on Edit Symbol from the drop down menu, it goes straight to Isolation Mode. That suits my case here as I wanted to apply the FX to the symbol, not just an instance of the symbol. Is there a way to apply the FX to the symbol without being in Isolation Mode (or to edit a symbol without being in Isolation Mode)?
