getting access to all tools

I'm using an old version of Illustrator (CS5). I can't have access to all the tools. When I click on the small triangle in the lower right corner of a tool, I get no response. Everything works in CS5 Photoshop when I do the same thing.

Did you perhaps just click on the tool (icon) and then immediately release the mouse button?

To get access to all tools of a tools group, usually you will have to wait at least a quarter second before releasing the mouse button. Otherwise the flyout will not appear.

An alternative way ist to repeatedly click on a tool while holding the Alt key on your keyboard. This way, you can cycle through all available tools inside a tool group.

Duhhhhh! That worked! Evidently I've been away from Photoshop and it's
companions for too long. A little embarrassing. Nevertheless...Thanks.

Have you tried a preferences reset?

You might also consider that your computing environment has outgrown CS5, now many versions out of date.

Preferences reset did not work. This is the first time that I used
Illustrator as I saw no need for it for my work until now. Some of the
tools seem to work. At this point the lack of functionality is
probably related to its age as you suggested. Thanks for trying.
