Hi,

I am getting some weird error pop up message when doing following in Adobe Illustrator:

Object > Path >Outline stroke

This coming up --->

ERROR:0SEG

I have never seen this kind of error before and have no clue what that means and why is this actually happening. I have never seen this before ...

Anybody who experienced the same "issue" and found solution for this ...?

Thank you for help.

Robert

I actually descructured my file and realised what seems to be the problem. You have probably 'GROUPED' an outlined stroke and regular path together somewhere. So if you have that 'messy' group within your selection and you try turning all into outline stroke, this error will appear. You can check for problematic spots by selecting everything, clicking 'expand', then if you lose some of the strokes, that means there's a problem in that part.

Once you find that group - ungroup it, turn all path to outline path and group again. After you cleared all these mistakes (if there are more than one) select all and turn into outline stroke.

I know this is an old thread with accepted correct answers, but I just discovered another possible cause of this error message in one of my own files. While creating a line icon, I intentionally included some tiny paths (0.0001 pt in length) because I wanted a few rows of circular "dots" that would maintain the same stroke weight as the rest of the paths in my icon. When it came time to outline the stroke, however, it gave me the Error:0SEG. I'm guessing that it was due to the tiny line length… maybe it can display a stroke around such a tiny path but can't figure out how to outline it? Neither "Expand" nor "Flatten Transparency" commands were able to successfully outline the strokes either. For my project, I ended up recreating my dots by using dashed lines with 0pt dashes and appropriately-sized gaps, and "Outline Stroke" worked just fine on those! Hope this helps someone.

Hi, I am having the exact same issue, and the fix offered is a nice way to go around it but it does not solve it. Please Adobe tell me how to make it work. More over when I use ''Expand'', I lose some of the strokes (see attachments).

Hi @elodie15B9,

We are sorry to hear this. Would it be possible for you to upload the file on Creative Cloud or any other similar service and share the download link here? I will forward it to the product team, and they will take a look at it.

Hi, I am dealing with the same issue. I use Windows and Illustrator CS6 (64-bit). I have a big illustration of a map with lots and lots of paths. My request is to make the paths, outline strokes but then it pops up an Error:0seg message. This is not the only file that has this problem, it's my second one which was a map also with many paths. The issue is that it allows me to pick some and make the command but not the whole. Something that should have taken 1 second takes me 3 hours because of this error. I believe that some paths don't allow it and I have no idea why. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue.
Something that I have to point out is that I sent it also to my friend to see if he can do it but it's still the same!
I hope this info helped. [  @Mylenium @Anshul_Saini ]

Hi,

It's me again @Bodatosa, select all the paths you want to do the command then go to:
Object> Expand
Then try the outline stroke command again. It seems to work for me. Just saved tone of hours!

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble. I agree with @Mylenium and would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where is this file saved? (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.
Does resetting Illustrator Preferences ( https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.
  • Does moving the elements to a new document or layer help resolve the issue?

We are here to help. We just need more information.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Without any info on your artwork we can't really tell you much. Could simply be an odd grouping or stray anchor points getting in the way. Other than that it could of course just be one of those gigazilion bugs in recent versions. more info would certainly help to clarify.
