Hello,

I am severely stuck. Whenever I apply the brush effect to a line, it will not then let me change the color of that line to a gradient. Similarly, when I apply the gradient to a regular line stroke and add a brush effect, it changes back to black. If anyone wants pictures, let me know. Thank you all!

You can't apply a gradient to an art brush.

What you can do is apply the gradient to a default thick line and then use a brush stroke as an opacity mask on it.
