I remember finding a solution to this and can't find it any more. When converting a shape to a gradient mesh, illustrator sometimes adds "helper" points that restrain the gradient between the mesh points. When these points are there, you can tell because the vector point handles don't operate the way you think they should. But I don't recall how to make these extra points visible, or how to remove them. Anyone?
