gradient mesh tool

i tried to use gradient mesh to a spoon and i started with drawing a rectangle. When i add gradient mesh to the rectangle it fills the rectangle to white. does anyone how to make it no fill?

Did you draw a spoon or a rectangle? Either way, did it change the underlying color of the object you drew? It should just add mesh points as you click and then you select those points and select the color you want to add. If you use the Menu>Object>Create Gradient Mesh it will add a highlight which has white, depending on the option you pick. Can you post an image

Er, probably not since gradient mesh' consist of fill colors you create.  You might be confusing the terminology because you really do not need a rectangle if you are applying the mesh to a "spoon".
