Gradient not working in text

I have created a text with a gradient to give a chrome style and it worked just fine. But now when I try to put that same gradient on a different text it just stays black. I have seen other issues posted here with similar issues but they state you cannot fill your text with a gradient and I have, so I am not sure what is going on. I have tried with straight text and text on a patha and neither one will match the first.
