Gradient stroke on circle is not smooth anymore

Hi there,

 

Doing a gradient stroke on a circle. As soon as I set the stroke to be applied ALONG the stroke and then outline the stroke, the circle isn't a smooth circle any more. 

Any idea how to fix this? My file needs the stoke to be outlined, and would love to avoid anything manual if possible.
