gradient tool

Hi, I drew an enclosed object with the line tool.  I selected it with the direct selection tool and I can't get it to fill with the gradient tool.  What am I doing wrong?

    if I set the fill to null and the stroke to gradiant, the border of the object is gradiant but I want the whole object to be filled  with the gradient


    THose are single paths. You will first need to combine them to get a shape

    does the stroke on top of the fill ? if not, just click on the stroke color as shown in the image below

    I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about but here is a screenshot of what I see.

    You've got a calligraphy brush applied. SEt that to a simple stroke
