gradient tool

Hi, I drew an enclosed object with the line tool.  I selected it with the direct selection tool and I can't get it to fill with the gradient tool.  What am I doing wrong?

does the stroke on top of the fill ? if not, just click on the stroke color as shown in the image below

You've got a calligraphy brush applied. SEt that to a simple stroke

Sorry, didn't enlarge your screenshot. The reason is you've got your gradient applied to the fill instead of the stroke. You need to exchange both by clicking on that little curved arrow. Then set the fill to none so that it won't irritate.

if I set the fill to null and the stroke to gradiant, the border of the object is gradiant but I want the whole object to be filled  with the gradient
