gradient transparency on patterned shape

(Illustrator CC) I made an shape then added a pattern to the shape using the swatches in the colour panel.

I then tried to make the shape fade to transparent using the gradient tool, however it turn the shape into a block colour rather than keeping the pattern.

How do I keep the pattern but still add the transparency gradient?
