Graphic style with rotated pattern not saved in Library

Explorer ,
Dec 04, 2025 Dec 04, 2025

When I make an object with a pattern, rotate the pattern, save that as a Graphic Style, and save that into the library: then I re-use this object from the library (-option-drag from the library) in another document, the graphic style isn't copied along with it.

Exactly what are you doing step by step?

  1. I make a pattern with horizontal lines.
  2. Apply that pattern to a square, or any other element.
  3. Rotate the pattern 45°.. Not the object, just the pattern.
  4. Make a new graphic style from this element. Any object that gets this graphic style applied has the pattern already rotated. Its too difficult to make a rotated pattern, so I choose to use graphic styles for that.
  5. Ad this as an illustration to the library.
  6. Make a new document, alt/option-drag it from the library to the new document. The pattern is added to the new document, but the graphic style isn't.

In older versions the graphic style was also copied to the new document. I can see that graphic styles in general can be copied through the libraries, but in this case it doesn't work with the rotated pattern.

I can also confirm the issue in Illustrator 30.0 and 29.8.2.

The graphic style definition does not get transferred in this case. It's a shortcoming.

Hi @dtpetermaas,

Thank you for the detailed steps. I tested the same workflow on my side, and I could still see the rotated pattern retained when placing the object from the Library into a new document. To rule out a sync issue, could you please try signing out of the Creative Cloud Desktop app and then signing back in to refresh the Library data?

Additionally, please try resetting Illustrator preferences manually and let me know if that improves the behavior. You can follow these guides if needed:

Manually: https://adobe.ly/48l4omN

Once done, please test again and share your observations.

I'm here to help!

Abhishek

I've totally deleted the illustrator folder, reinstalled in English, restarted CC-app, restarted laptop, but still get the same result: The graphic style is missing. Today I explained the use of graphic styles when rotated patterns are needed. But it turned out to be a 'no-go' when Libraries are used to transform them from one document to another. I hope Adobe will fix this soon, because I think it's really annoying that a Library has a weak spot here.

I can replicate what Peter mentioned. The Graphic from the Library is placed as a group, but the Graphic Style is missing.

I tried it in an older version 2023, but that has the same problem. It could have been like that a long time ago or the Library behaviour has changed.
