First use 3D extrude at 0 degrees for XYZ to make an extrud on your art

make your art a symbol

then 3D Extrude your coin and apply that as a graphic

You want to put an additional embossing on a 3D object?

That's not possible in Illustrator. You can add a label on it, but not emboss something. You would need real 3D software to do that.

Are you certain?  I am making it from scratch, i.e., a coin starting with an ellipse.  Can I not combine a glyph and a circle, so that when I apply the 3d effect, the map counts the outline of the glyph as part of the surface and makes that 3d as well?

And if I can't do it in Adobe, what software do I need to use?  I can't believe I have reached the limit of Adobe CS capabilities.  Wow.
