Help! Error message and corrupt files

I'm working with Adobe CS6 (64 bit) on a work computer. I've created two files (separately from each other, no cutting and pasting between files etc.) and both are coming up with the error message below when I try and reopen the file. I'm not a super technical person but have been using Illustrator for years and have never come across this problem, I've no idea how to fix it. My IT department are able to restore previous versions of files but inevitably these don't contain all the content, and I'm wondering if I can identify what the root cause is so that I can stop it from continually happening - what am I doing wrong?! From looking at the error message it seems maybe its a particular symbol that is causing the problem? I am using a free symbol library from IAN website.
I really need to be able to use Illustrator to complete my job but it seems every file I create gets corrupted which is not helpful! There seem to be heaps of threads with illegal operand questions but none really match up so don't make much sense to me?
Any ideas?

Those symbols might be corrupted.
Looks like a really old file and maybe hasn't even been saved out of Illustrator.
You could try and create a new Illustrator file and then place the corrupt file in it. Embed it.
A lot of objects won't be fully editable. But maybe you can use some of the content.
I would strongly suggest that you work with the files your IT department could recover and only copy parts of what can be recovered using the method with placing the AI file.
Do you save directla to a server? THis might also corrupt files.
In case your files are on a server, try and first move them to your harddisk then open in Illustrator.

Thank you so much for your reply! I just created the files so they shouldn't be old? I'm going to take your advice and work from the hard drive for now and see if that helps. I appreciate the advice

Hi Sarah,
I would request you to please try the following methods to recover file.
Open file in Acrobat,
File >> Save >> EPS
or File >> Export >> Postscript >> EPS
Open result in Illustrator
If it still does not work try steps in below mentioned links:
How to fix damaged Illustrator files
Error: "Can't open the illustration..." | Opening file | Illustrator CS4 and earlier
Enable content recovery mode | Illustrator CS2-CS5
If it does not help, would you mind sharing your file? I will try recovering it at my end.
Regards,
Srishti

Thank you so much for your reply. I will give the methods you suggest a try and see if I can recover what I had worked on. I'd love to know what is causing it so it doesn't keep happening! Ill let you know how I go.
