im trying to make a business card for someone and they gave me the ai file of the logo which he got from fiverr. the guy also gave him a 3d version with some kind of lighting effect on top, but he doesn't have the ai file of it or a version on a plain white background. How do I do this effect on it?

Why not use the artwork from the original artist?  What about the original "Layered" Ps file which would allow you to ( hopefully ) delete the background or keep it a transparent .psd file?  The bitmap artwork may look good on your monitor several sizes larger than it will appear on your business card as reflective artwork, but you should avoid complex bitmap artwork for such items as business cards, and/or stationery.  3D artwork is meant for special applications, but is limited to its use.  I recommend you reduce the supplied artwork to the size you intend for the business card and get a proof made.  You might be surprised.  Stationery, signage, vehicle graphics, etc., all should be simplified to maximum 3 spot colors.

He didn't give me the 3d version of the logo in a psd file I only got it in a jpg. I'll talk to my printer and ask him if it will print ok, if it wont I can just tell the client that we will use a simpler version of the logo without all the effects on it.

Might be less trouble not to bother- the cheapskate client used that silly site, and then it looks like had issues with the designer..

Anyway, to try  maybe look at using some other software, eg Photoshop

Thank you. I ended up using photoshop last night. I used lighting effect and then bevel and emboss and drop shadow. It doesn't look exactly the same but I think it might work...maybe ill play around with it for a couple more minutes. Thank your for your help.

How long have you been working at that now? 2 hours? 3 hours? Why not pay that designer on fiverr a reasonable amount of money and get the original file?

That's a pretty extensive lesson to have answer on a forum, but to start, you'd use the .ai file. Under Effect, select 3D>Extrude and Bevel. This item uses a pretty low-looking extrude depth. And, you'll want to change the rotation settings on the top of the window to say "Front". Try setting the extrude depth to about 5pt with a classic bevel and maybe a 2pt height? Then, select More Options - and you'll see an area to affect the angle, brightness, size and more of the light source.

Hopefully, that'll give you a start...

I was playing  around with the 3d effect. I didn't realize there was a more options button. I'll have to play around with it and see if I can get it. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

you won't be able to get that kind of lighting with 3D effects. Most likely that has not been built in Illustrator. It would take hours to produce it using gradients, blending, etc. You won't be able to get it for a few bucks.
