Help with envelope distort

Hi, I'm trying to create an envelope distort with top object, despite my top object being a single path, I'm being given the message - This path requires a selection of multiple objects. The top object must be a single path or mesh, or a symbol containing a single path or mesh. Does anyone have ant ideas to get around this?

It's a compound something. You need to revert that. Either using the pathfinder panel for a compound shape or the object menu for a compound path.

AHHHHHHH. Why am I having so much trouble with this as well. I have my shape and my text. Ive tried to move to front for the shape and text to the back and im still getting the same error message. Im trying to get two seperate words into two seperate sections. Ive included a photo of the shape and the layers panel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which error message do you get?

You have moved the shape to the front of its group and the type to the bottom of its sublayer, so the stacking order is still wrong.

In the Layers panel drag the shape out of its group and drop it above the type you want to reshape. Then select both and create the envelope. Repeat the process with your other shape and type.

It looks like in the layers panel that you are using an image as top object. This should be a vector path.

Advanced > Ignore White

i was face the same problem. in my case, put the text under the object is useless. so i find another way by re draw the object using pentool. and it works! cause before that, i use image trace to make the object. hope this will help you guys.

Hi, I'm a good few years behind on this, but nothing's working for me. I feel like I've tried everything but I can't seem to get it. I've got my text layer underneath my shape layer which is a <path> and it keeps doing this! I'm so confused help me please haha

For this distortion you might want to try the default "Bulge" envelope and jut drag the slider to the left.

It looks like your text may be regular text. Try selecting the text with the Selection tool and then choose Type > Create outlines.

THe text is no problem.

But you have a compound path. That cannot be used as an envelope.

That was my guess, but I still do not know how to fix it. So what is the best solution? 

Im trying to get the text to follow the topline of the shape. It was open ended (no bottom line) which I added to close the shape and that resulted in the compound path. I am over 2 hours into fighting this...

I'm not sure exactly what you want the illustration to look like. But this is what I did. Maybe that is what you are looking for:

 Starting with the outer shape:

I copied the shape and edited it using Pathfinder so that it wasn't as wide. 

I put the text inside the edited shape, Making sure that the edited shape with on top of the text.

Selecting both the text and dthe outer shape,and choosing Object > Envelope Distort > Make with top object resuted in this:

Then I overlapped the text onto the original outer shape:

You may want to adjust some of the letters. If so, select the text object and Object > Expand > Object. then Object > Path > Simplify. Now you can manipulate the anchor points on the text to adjust it.
