Hi guys, I just came across something and not sure how to solve it... maby it's just me. But is it possible to create a gradient in illustrator where the transparency is coming in even from the top and left hand side? Can do it in PS but wanna know if it's possible in Illustrator. Clipping mask or compound set to transparency wouldln't let me do it either.... very annoying. Any ideas would be great. I would like to add a transparancy from the left hand side too. Thank you 🙂
If you have the current version of Illustrator, in the Gradient panel, you can choose Freeform Gradient. You can add and delete points in the Gradient and assign any amount of opacity/transparency you want to each point in the gradient.

thanks so much for the input. I am using the freeform gradient in illustrator. I tried it before but hat had it clipped in a transparancy mask and then it wouldn't really work. Beautiful... Much appreciated Baraba. Have a great day

Hello, NinaW1082
“Freeform Gradient” recommended by Barbara_Ash is a great tool.
Please try it.
As an alternative, if you are familiar with the Photoshop feel, why not create an opacity mask?
Create a gradient to be masked with the gradient tool or mesh tool, and create an opacity mask with the transparent panel.

Can you explain how the opacity mask in your first example (gradient tool) contains a double linear gradient, one from left to right, one from top to bottom? I can achieve this effect by adding a second fill to the masking object, setting the one on top to Multiply or Overlay. Is that how you did it?
As far as I know, a single object can not be filled with more than one gradient unless a second fill is added.

Hello, ddkatz.
Sorry at the lack of explanation.
First of all, I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly because I'm not good at English.
And I am worried that I can write the answer correctly in English.
I'm sorry if I am using strange expressions or rude words.
As you guessed, I am layering two gradients.
However, the upper object is not multiplication, but in normal mode, Black 100% opacity 100% → Black 100% opacity 0%.
The result is almost the same as the one you guessed.
thanks.
