home screen is black and blank

whenever I open both photoshop as well as illustrator, I get a blank home screen. I'm not able to see my previous work and I've updated the software, uninstalled and reinstalled it, so I'm not sure what to do

perhaps you disabled the option

Preferences > General >

[ ] Show Home Screen When No Documents Are Open
