I'd avoid barcode fonts, because you can't easily apply things like bar width reduction. Pro-quality barcode software has come down in price a lot recently - for example, stuff like : Barcode Basics - Barcode Generator on the Mac App Store

...apps like that will kick out vector graphics (e.g. EPS or PDF) that you can drop into Illustrator or InDesign if you see fit. Or JPGs for web/MS Office use.

If you'd rather not purchase anything, you can try Terry Burton's excellent online barcode generator at http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/

After you click the Make Barcode button, the resulting data-glyph will appear with links above allowing you to save/open in various formats, one of which is EPS. Note that many of the multidimensional barcode formats are only output in raster form, and the EPS output will be such, but most of the 1D barcode formats saved as EPS will open in Illustrator as vectors.

My barcode generator at http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/ now generates 2D barcodes (QR Codes, Data Matrix, etc...) as vectors.

All the best,

Terry Burton

You could download a barcode font or buy a specific barcode generator plug-in.
