How do I achieve a similar effect?

Hello, I am looking to understand how I can achieve a simular effect of this image. I loved the layered 3D look but don't even know what to Google to start.

What you need would be of course that kind of posterized drawing. That is just working with the pen tool. With an appropriate template, some experimantation and a little luck your might be able to autotrace it.

Then what you need is on the left side bright edge and to the right the drop shadow. You could even apply that as a graphic style.
