Question

How do I change opacity of multiple strokes?

I am building a sankey diagram, which has many paths of varying stroke widths. All of them have 60% opacity assigned to them. However, I decided that for some of these strokes, I would rather they have an opacity of 40%, in order to better see the text on top. Problem seems to be that I can only change the appearance of strokes individually or if the strokes I'm changing have the same width. This is a major pain, as I have to grab each stroke individually then go into menus to change opacity. Is there some short of shortcut other than the appearances pallette? I've tried everything I can think of.

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

In order to (maybe) suggest some more speedy ways to change appearances, one would have to take a look at one of your sample .ai files. So, in case you can provide one (including a description about what exactly is desired), provide one.

Chose one of your strokes, then

Select > Same > Opacity

Once all the strokes are selected, you can change the opacity in the control bar at the top of the screen. As you can see here, the strokes do not have to have the same width (or even the same color) for this to work. (Note that it will also select filled items with that same opacity.)

Well, making the selection is one thing, applying the opacity setting another. You can speed up application of the opacity setting by saving it as a Graphic Style. Then, with the selection made, a single click applies the styling to all selected.
