Try and flatten transparency before converting.

If you need live effects you will have to adjust color definitions, but still you might not get that same effect.

Thanks, I was hoping to not have to flatten.

I need to change the background color to a CMYK breakdown to match other pieces. It's for a Trade show wall.

Just the background?

I would follow a kind of brute force attempt and: set up color management, then enter the CMYK values you want to get and see what happens. You might need to go a little back and forth between the RGB and CMYK view in the color panel (don't change the document color mode yet).

When you get the color, rasterize in the resolution you need. Then use the same color management setup in Photoshop and convert into profile. The colors should come out as expected.

Maybe try that with a small piece of artwork?
