how do i copy several artboards from different documents on illustrator

i know that i can drag and paste my artboards into different documents, but i need to do it without getting the bits around the outside of the artboard as it's a drawing so there are several pen marks around the outside which i dont want. i am making a comic so need to be able to get all of the panels in the same document

I am curious to why you dont "place" the original art into the new document rather. you can set the parameters for import including clip to artboard?
