How do I create a border around the entire image?

I'm new and learning the program. My problem: I made a cupcake, that is made of multiple colors. I want to create a border around the entire image. I group everything and choose stroke, but it strokes every shape in the image and not just the outside of the cupcake. Any help? Thanks!

Select all the shapes that make up the cupcake.

Copy them.

Edit > Paste in Front.

Pathfinder > Unite.

Give the united objects a stroke color but no fill color.

Object > Arrange > Send to back.

You need to create a sepatrate path that encompasses the artwork, eitehr from scratch or based on it. It just doesn't work how you expect.
