I can't remember when this started happening, but I'd estimate it's been at least 5 years.
Periodically the bounding box that appears around selected items will stick on to something that is no longer selected. The work around I've found is to select the object that the bounding box is mistakenly stuck to, hide it, make a new object, delete it then unhide all. Not a huge deal only it's just amazing to me this has been going on for so long. I just updated to 21.0.0 and it's still happening.
Can we just get it taken care of. Am I crazy?

If you file a bug report, then Adobe will be aware of your issue. They can't fix what they don't know is a problem. This is likely an issue that is not affecting many people. It's probably due to some unique circumstances on your end, so you should provide them as much detail as you possibly can in your bug report. Screen recordings of the issue happening would be great! Also, tell them about your system hardware, software, OS, how to reproduce the issue, etc.
Also, I'm going to get a moderator to move your thread out of the general, all-of-Adobe forum Lounge into the Illustrator forum in case others are experiencing the same problem and can share what they've tried to fix it.

similar to this?
Illustrator randomly selects unrelated objects
i know it's no consolation really, as there's no real solution, but you can read about other user's workarounds. i have experienced this myself, but very rarely.

Yes that's the same issue. Big surprise there's no fix yet.
This bug has been there since at least 2008.
