How do I get out of Preview?

My saved files from my computer keep opening up in adobe illustrator as PREVIEW.  How do I get PREVIEW off so that I can edit my files?  FYI, I made the artwork files that I saved on my computer in ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

You can edit files in preview. In what way do you fel you cannot edit files? Are you opening them in a program other than Illustrator? Are layers locked?

I am new so Im not sure if I locked layers but I cant edit my PNG after I have saved it.  My selection tool will work to select my text but I cannot change the font or the colour of the text.  When I hit my Text Tool all it does is try to add another text box instead of putting the curser on my existing text.

You cannot edit png files, you can export them from vector content.

If you want to change the png, edit the vector .ai file and export again.
