Question

How do I join lines to make single object?

I took a pdf that someone created for plane plans and want to create objects to draw on them but when I open and close all the lines it appears there are separate items still so it makes it hard to do 'Draw Inside'

I have included a sample of what I am working with.  Just looking for some guidence on how I can make the current items out lines into one object so I can then click on it, select 'Draw Inside' and the paint will stay within the lines.  I had to save it as pdf since forum didn't like me attaching as .ai

I am just starting with Illustrator so don't know much.

Thanks.

Another suggestion would be to join the paths. I use this all the time with die lines for packages that come from CAD/CAM apps. It's manual and tedious, but it works.

Select two adjoining points with the Direct Selection tool and then command + J (on the Mac). (For Join. It's under the Object>Path menu.) You have to select each endpoint on the adjoining open-ended lengths of stroke but the end result is that the outside shape is all one piece of stroke.

BTW, you can't do this with lines that don't touch, like the ones in the middle of your shape.

Hope this is what you are trying to achieve.

Hi @4loopdev,

does that works for you?

Or do you need further assistance?

@pixxxel_schubser, thanks for the video.  I will study this and let you know if need further assistance.  Some reason the notifications from Adobe went to spam and just saw them.   Appreciate your time.

standalone?

That does not help. You have to do some steps before:

Have you tried converting it into a live paint object? Seems like that might solve the problem of holding the paint withing the outlines, unless I am misunderstanding the problem.

The shapebuilder tool should take care of this.

Or are you looking for an automated solution?

Not an automated solution.   I am willing to do it manually just trying to figure out what to do.

I tried the shapebuilder tool but didn't work for me.  Maybe I am not figuring out how to it from the pdf I attached.  If I manually draw two objects and use the tool it does what it appears to do but from the pdf attached something else needs to be done.

Thanks for the info.

"something else needs to be done."

Hmmm. Then could you perhaps give us a clue what is happening and what you expect to happen instead?
