How do I make an icicle/ice crystal design in illustrator?

Hi, everyone. I'm trying to come up with a icy design that will be laser etched on a piece of glass. I want you to be able to see through the glass, so I don't want the ice design to be on the entire page. I was thinking about one of two options:

Icicles hanging down from the top of the page
Ice crystals in the four corners of the page

I'm brand new to illustrator, and I really don't know where to start. I know it would help if I knew what design to make, but I could really use some suggestions.

Icicles are very different than ice crystals.  You really need to have a design established befroe you render the artwork in Illustrator.  If you are etching, there may be some limitations on what you can logistically do in your artwork because of the production of the etch itself.  There are many approaches to what you can and cannot do, but first on the list is determining what you plan to do for a design.  That, my friend, is completely up to you or someone you hire to design for you.
