How do you import individual animation frames onto separate layers in Illustrator?

Based-on creating specialized animations that only work within Illustrator, how do you import individual animation frames onto separate layers in Illustrator? I'd like to have a sequence of pre-rendered frames that Illustrator will open and place onto sequential layers within the Layer's panel. Please advise me if my dream of animating in Illustrator with pre-rendered frames may become a reality.

Release to Layers is a good idea.

But first you have to get your pre-rendered frames into Illustrator.

Don't use the File > Place command, because you will have to place each frame separately.

Open the folder with the sequence, select them all and drag them to an open Illustrator document.

You may want to use Object > Artboards > Fit to Selected Art, to make your document the same size as your sequence frames.

Select All and use Release to Layers.

They will become sublayers of Layer 1, so you may want to drag them above Layer 1 to make them main layers.

I agree with Ray Yorkshire, Release items to separate layers from the layers panel flout menu is certainly worth looking into. This works particularly well if you have created a blend and want to animate the steps of the blend.
