How to attach a line segment to a closed path

New Here ,
Jan 12, 2017 Jan 12, 2017

I am trying to attach 2 end points to closed paths so it is all one path and I can create a shape and colour the white space. I have tried releasing the compound path and merging through pathfinder, used the join tool, cut the path, etc and no luck. I really need this so i can use the white space as a shape, but as of now those 2 points are not connected on either side, therefore i cannot use live paint to colour it. I also received the following error message. I attached some screenshots below. Thanks in advanced.

Mary,

An open path that extends (about) to (or past) the Anchor Points of the existing paths should do, using Live Paint.

I'm agree with Jacob, If you select all CMD (or CTRL on Win) + A and after apply the live-paint what kind of error message you get?

The issue is the two end points of the line i created to fill the gap isn't connected to the existing path outlining the dark area, therefore it's not a complete path for the white area to be filled with live paint. This is an error i get when i use live paint with everything selected. Thanks

THis is why it won't help when you just show tiny details of a much larger illustration when asking for help.

We need to know the complete picture. Otherwise it's like stabbing in the dark: most probably someone will get hurt.

Please show the complete artwork together with the open layers panel (so that all objects can be seen)

It seems that you used a clippin path in your graphic and, of course, when you try to create a live paint group with inside a clippin path this is not allowed. You can't expand a clippin path so you have to find where are all yours clippin paths and decide how to manage them. Maybe you can releases them and after try other solutions or exclude the clippin paths when you select all the graphics element before creating a live paint group.

Have you tried expanding the line segment prior to merging that with the other shape?

outline stroke then merge fill.  Then if you need the object to measure to the centerline of the stroke, offset path half of the stroke width.
