Question

How to change dy values with numbers?

Hey lads,

Something's been driving me nuts. Let's say you make a square shape and you want to change two lines in that shape with the direct selection tool, you can do that by double-clicking the line and dragging it, right?

This works just fine, but the problem is that the dy values and -dy values always vary a little bit. I'd like to change these values manually (numerically) without the inaccurate dragging of the corners. Is there any way to do this so that you have identically diagonal lines?

Thanks!

    spiderguard,

As I (mis)understand it, how about just choosing the relevant Reference Point in the Transform palette and then change the W and H values by the same number (by adding/subtracting it to/from the current value, just add + or - and then the number after the current number).

    Hi Jacob,

Thanks for your reply. You can see in the screenshot above what I actually meant 🙂

Like Jacob said, subtract the dY value from the Y in the Transform panel.

I'd recommend selecting the one path and using Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform to make a copy of the path. You can move the copy by specifying a distance from the original. Make whatever changes you want to the first path, and the second (or more--depending on how many copies you specify) will update. The copy mirrors whatever modification you perform on the original. If you want to make the copy (or copies) into separate objects from the original, go to Object > Expand Appearance.

I might not have been clear.

Let's say I make a square shape and I want to do this with the direct selection tool (white arrow):

Is there a way to change the dX and dY values by writing the exact values, rather than pulling the mouse up and down?
