Hi there,

Apologies in advance if the solution is something I should've known.
I haven't used Illustrator for a long time.....

When I try to type a text, the colour of text always comes as black despite Fill is set to white (see screenshots). I am trying to type a white text on a black background.

I can of course change a text colour by selecting the text and then change fill colour but surely I should be able to write a text with any selected colour in Illustrator like other adobe applications?

Or am I missing something? I use Illustrator (25.2.1) on Mac Big Sur.

I really appreciate your advice..... this small problem is driving me slightly mad.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I am afraid there is no direct setting to change the default text color. In addition to @Jacob Bugge suggestion, you can do this by changing the default profiles settings. But I wouldn't recommend this. However, if you still want to do it, you may try the following steps:

  1. Open Finder > Go menu > Go to folder > paste this path " ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator 25/en_GB/New Document Profiles/ " > Click Go
  2. Open every File in that folder in Illustrator app (Art & Illustration.ai, Film & Video.ai, Mobile.ai, Print.ai & Web.ai).
  3. Now duplicate all the following steps in all these documents.
  4. Create a text layer.
  5. Go to Window menu > Type > Character Styles

  6. In Character Styles Panel, Click on Hamburger menu > Select Character Styles Options...

  7. Now Character Style Options dialog box open > Select Chacahter color > Select White > Click "Ok".

  8. Now delete the text layer.
  9. Save all the files.
  10. Close Illustrator and reopen it.
  11. Create a new document, and the text layer color should be white now.

I hope it helps!

Let us know if you need any further assistance. We'd be happy to help.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini
