How to change the duplication stacking order preferences in Adobe Illustrator

Explorer ,
Jun 09, 2023 Jun 09, 2023

Hello - I am trying to find an option to stack the layers that I duplicate in the reverse order that A Illus wants to do it.

If I select a layer, go up to the hamburger icon on the layers panel and click duplicate, it stacks it on top of the previous layer.

I want the stacking to be under the layer I am duplicating.

Is this a choice I can make in preferences?

It has always seemed backward to me, and I spend time reordering my objects in the layers panel because of it.

Thanks Everyone.

That is the default, and makes the most sense for most people. Understandly your work might be in a different industry, or maybe you prefer to work on your backgrounds last.

You can do use reverse order to fix

After further research found a solution for you, by dragging in the layers palette

Copy the selection to a layer, sublayer, or group

Alt-drag selection

Option-drag selection

Hi Mike, Thanks for trying but no. I want this as a preferences setting. Not to have to grab and move my layers manually. I am doing that now. I want the app to behave differently. I just need to know what to look for in the settings to change this.  You are right, I must just think differently than most designers.
