How to create 3D type using Blends, like this example

Hi! I'm trying to create a similar type effect as this example. I know about basic Blends, but the dimensionality in this example has me stumped. Any ideas?

The real work in this example clearly tweaking the dashes and colors/opacity for a consistent appearance after having expanded the blend again. Otherwise there's not much else here. It's just basic blends as well or for that matter even manually created inbetween shapes.
