You could use the Appearance Panel to add a new pattern fill below the regular character fill. You can use one of the patterns from the Swatches > Patterns > Basic Graphics > Basic Graphics_Lines, or create your own.
Use the Transform Effect twice. One to move the pattern fill and one to rotate only the pattern.
