I just downloaded the free adobe cc to see if I could create a logo. I'm lost! I don't even know how to open a damn file. Can someone walk me through this? Thx.
If you are new, then being lost in programs like illustrator is normal, as they are far from intuitive; it's best to put in the hours first, learning to use the software, then start on a project.
Doing it the other way round means you will keep running into roadblocks and get a headache googling solutions.
Depends on how you like to learn, eg here's good free course on youtube

Logos are generally best created in Adobe Illustrator as vector graphics.

I agree. AI is a better choice for creating logos, icons & text titles because they remain sharp and crisp in all sizes.
Photoshop is better for raster (bitmap) images like photos and web graphics -- JPG, PNG or animated GIF.

Unfortunately, Illustrator or any other software program does not "design" a logo. Try to start with basic tool tryouts like the Rectangle tool, the Pencil tool or the Pen tool. Start with File > New > Letter size document. Just relax and start fooling around with the basic tool, like the Ellipse tool. Open the Character palette and select a font. Type anything that comes to mind and use the Character palette to adjust various parts of the text. It will not happen as soon as you launch the program. To open a file, just use File > Open. Go online and search free clipart or logo files. Download a few and take a look at how they were put together. If you have an assignment to create a logo, start with pencil and paper. If you have some artistic abilities, a sketch is a good start.
