How to create custom borders in Illustrator CS5

Hello,

I'm working in Illustrator CS5.1 and unsure to go about  creating DASHED borders. The problem I've having is the corners are not connected and they should be. Is there a way to do this.

    The way I usually create custom borders is with the pattern brush. Read up on it in the manual, then load the pattern brush swatches to look at how those were created. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

    I've tried that but can't seem to understand how the corners are created.
