How to deal with a Clip Group

When you converted the live text to outlines it automatically becomes grouped.  Just a simple matter of Object > Ungroup when you have the group selected.  As already mentioned, you can use the Direct Selection tool ( White Arrow ) within the originally grouped items or after you've ungrouped them.

I assume you have a result like this

Would normally suggest double click on contents, but trouble is you get mixed appearances

Instead switch to the hollow arrow tool, and sl;ect one letter at a time

To start form scratch and clear fills so looks liek file paths you are used to

If we know what you wish to do next, we can advsie you better. Adding a stroke that only goes outwards you would add a stroke, and drag it under contents.

Vector objects group.

From the Apperance panel, command ADD NEW FILL.

You can apply a gradient. All objects are applied to the gradient as a whole.

At any time, you'll be able to modify the subparts without difficulty.

DEGRADE LOST when you break the group.

The best method for modification on objects is to edit, double-click to work as ISOLATE MODE.

If it’s a clipping group (or any kind of group), there are several ways to make edits:

1. Double-click with the Selection tool to enter Isolation mode
   
   
2. Select individual objects using the Layers panel selection indicator
   
   
3. Use the Direction Selection tool to select individual objects
