How to get line effect on a shape

I don't really know what this is called so I thought I'd ask here. I'm trying to make this kind of line effect inside a shape, and don't really know where to look or what to do to learn how to do it. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks, I just picked a random font, in this case Avenir Black.

You could create a horizontal pattern, fill the shape with it and rotate the pattern fill.
