I am creating a table tent (4.5" x 5.5").  I want to insert "checkmarks" and then change the color.  In other products this is really easy but in Illustrator I just cant figure it out !!

In InDesign or Illustrator use the Glyph Panel, it shows all Glyphs (Characters) of a selected font.

It is not true, the the checkmark is always on slot 4, it depends on the font type. OTF have more than 256 slots, up to 65000, so the zone for special symbols is somewhere else than the numbers are.
