how to inset round edges on ellipse

Hi community.

I have made a round ellipse shape and I have chosen its ends to be round, but the options of inner and outside alighn stroke are greyed out.

You can't use those options on an open path.

You can, however, use the width tool to set up a width profile that sits entirely on one side of a path and use that.
